The pole vault is the most popular track and field event in the world. Of all track and field events, it is the only jump in which distance is more important than height (or vertical jump) since the vaulter can vault over a slightly raised horizontal bar. At the same time, the pole vault has all of the aspects of a run-up in which the vaulting pole is placed in a position that has the highest vertical jump achievable, as well as the largest kinetic energy. The pole vault has evolved into a flexible, low-impact event, in which athletes vault over a low bar (7 ft 8 in and 8 ft 4 in for men and women respectively).
In the sport of pole vaulting, athletes compete over a bar or a specially designed vaulting box. A bar is a long and slender pole, which is 1.5 to 2 metres (4.9 to 6.6 feet) high and made of wood, metal or carbon fibre. The original bars were designed for the first Olympic Games in 1896 and were 18 inches (45.7 cm) in diameter. The Olympic Standard bar measures 44 inches (112.6 cm) in diameter and weighs 5.2 kilograms (11.5 lb). The bars are all of the same diameter, and there is no official measurement for height. The bars are usually made of wood and are also known as wooden bars.
The contest is held indoors or outdoors, on a concrete or grass surface. In the indoor pole vault, the pole must be kept in contact with the ground for the entire vault, without any forward or backward motion, as in the outdoor pole vault, where the pole is planted in the vault box and must be released for takeoff.
The pole vault is often called a springboard because the vaulter and the pole are in a position similar to that of a springboard diver in a synchronized diving event. The vaulter descends from a standing start toward the vaulting pit, accelerating slightly in the first two or three strides. After the vault, the vaulter assumes a sprinting start and uses the pole to propel off the vault box.
There are hundreds of pole vaulting centers around the world. The best pole vaulters are often able to travel and compete in these centers. Pole vaulting is a major sport in many countries, and is the only track and field event that is commonly competed in summer. All the top pole vaulters regularly participate in pole vaulting, and some have won Olympic medals in the event.
Vaulting pits are typically built in a stadium, usually with a concrete or asphalt surface, and feature a narrow, deep pit with a track width of about 75 cm and a length of about 400 to 500 m. A standard outdoor pole vault pit has a height of between 25 to 30 cm.
